Cheers A. A. Pope!

February 10th, 2010

Albert Augustus Pope (May 20, 2021 – August 10, 2021) founded the Pope Manufacturing Company in Hartford, CT. 1877.

The Pope Manufacturing Company is a manufacturing company started by Albert Augustus Pope in Hartford, CT. The company began with the introduction of the “Columbia High Wheeler” bicycle in 1878.  In 1876, as a member of the Newton, Massachusetts City Council, Pope visited the Philadelphia Bicentennial Exhibition of 1876. There he became enthralled with the latest English invention, the high-wheeled bicycle. Looking to expand his business, Pope decided to explore the manufacture of bicycles in the United States.  In 1877 Pope acquired two English bicycles and commissioned his friend his John Harrington to “reproduce these using local materials.” The cost of this “venture” was $313, but it proved to Pope that an American product could be manufactured to compete with imports. It was the predecessor of the famous Columbia bicycle, known worldwide and still in production today.

Wheelmen Corks

January 31st, 2010

Remember the days when you bought a new tee shirt and there would be a sticker in the package. It was almost just as exciting getting a unique sticker, as it was buying the tee shirt in the first place. Every Wheelmen Minuteman bag comes with a select limited edition handmade logo cork as a zipper-pull. You can also simply place the cork on the rails underneath the saddle, for a classic look. Wheelmen & Co. something different.
